The Mercedes-Benz GLC was developed as the company's answer to growing demand for compact luxury SUVs in the global market.
Development began in the early 2010s, with Mercedes-Benz recognizing the need to expand its SUV portfolio beyond the large GLE and GL models. The GLC was positioned to directly compete with the BMW X4 and Audi Q5, targeting affluent buyers seeking luxury, performance, and practicality.
The debut GLC was unveiled in 2015 and launched globally that same year, offering multiple engine options and trim levels. Mercedes-Benz introduced the sportier GLC Coupe variant in 2016, creating a dual-variant strategy that broadened market appeal.
The X253 has undergone continuous evolution with technology updates, infotainment improvements, and the introduction of plug-in hybrid (GLC 350de) and fully electric (EQC) variants. Regular facelifts have kept the model current and competitive in the rapidly evolving luxury SUV segment.
